There are several methods for fasting, I practice intermittent fasting frequently. Intermittent fasting is currently one of the most popular methods of fasting. It involves cycling between periods of fasting and eating within a specific time window. There are several different intermittent fasting protocols, here is some of my frequent methods:
1. 16/8 method: This method involves fasting for 16 hours each day and restricting your eating window to 8 hours. For example, you might choose to eat your meals between 12pm and 8pm, then fast from 8pm until 12pm the next day. This is my favorite method of fasting.
2. Two days a week fast. With this approach, you eat normally for five days of the week, while on the remaining two days, you restrict your calorie intake to around 500-600 calories per day. These fasting days don't have to be consecutive and can be spread throughout the week. I do cycle into this method occasionally.
3. Alternate-day fasting: This method involves alternating between fasting days and non-fasting days. On fasting days, you might limit your calorie intake to a certain amount, typically around 500-600 calories. I tried this method, but it didn’t work for me.
4. Eat-stop-eat: This approach involves fasting for 24 hours once or twice a week. For example, you might eat dinner one day and then fast until dinner the next day. I generally cycle into this method after a long vacation.
These are just a few examples of intermittent fasting methods, and there are other variations as well. The popularity of intermittent fasting can be attributed to its flexibility and simplicity compared to other fasting protocols. However, it's important to remember that the effectiveness and suitability of any fasting method can vary from person to person, so it's essential to find an approach that works best for your individual needs and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns.
You can also try fasting with some hydration that doesn’t break your fast or spikes your glucose. Here are my hydration choices
Zen Basil Hydrate:
Zen Basil Hydrate is an Electrolytes drink mix pack designed to not break fast ( I personally wore a glucose monitor to perfect the formula to make sure it does not spike blood sugar)
Zen Basil Hydrate drink mix was a game changer for me to continue prolonging my fasting journey with ease and my main motivation to bring this product to you!
Water, coffee, tea, mct, and coconut milk ( 1 oz)
Dry Fast
A few times a year I will try an ultimate fast called the dry-fast. This fasting cycle can range from a few days to a week. Here’s one example I’m practicing today.
16 hours Dry fast. After the 16 hours I will eat and hydrate for 8 hours until I dry-fast again for another 16 hours.
The meal to break my fast is very important, which starts with Zen Basil Hydrate and its a complete clean ingredients
Whole Foods rich in key nutrients: fiber, protein, healthy fats, micronutrients, omegas, polyphenols, and healthy glucose like dates or honey, seasonal vegetables, and fruits. My favorite type of ingredients are Whole Foods that are Lectin free, gluten free, pesticide free, chemical free, hormone free pasteurized and grass finished. Many of the recipes are posted on my recipes page.
Here is the science behind the 16 hour dry-fast method. It can be very beneficial for your longevity, activation of NAD, and so much more.
“I call this Biohacking the Zen way”
I generally promote hydration as your key for health and longevity, especially to hydrate at the cellular level.
By hydration I mean gel water, which is plant-based foods that are naturally and organically, rich in key minerals as in case of Zen Basil hydrate and plain purified water. My favorite toppings in my hydration drinks are fresh herbs and fruits, especially citrus fruits.
Chemically engineered ingredients and synthetically packed nutrients such as “natural flavors” “citric acid” are all made with chemicals and contain obesegens. Drinks with these ingredients should not claim to be hydrating.
The data around real food nutrition over synthetic is loud and clear: Real Food is better and there’s no comparison!
However, Researchers have found that
Short-term dehydration and fasting can have various effects on the body, including the production of certain chemicals organically and their impact on longevity.
One important chemical involved in cellular energy metabolism and longevity is nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+).
You may have heard about this term in supplements or injections, a new and expensive invention and often without solid results or sufficient evidence..
I’m here to share facts around publication around NaD naturally and organically.
Here is how dry short term fasting can be beneficial…
During periods of short time dehydration and fasting, the body undergoes several psychological and physiological changes as it adapts to the limited availability of water and nutrients.
One of the responses is the activation of cellular stress pathways, such as the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway and the sirtuin pathway.
I’m going to get a little Sciency here, but bare with me it’s important to understand there’s published research behind this concept..
AMPK is an enzyme that plays a key role in cellular energy homeostasis.
It is activated in response to low energy levels, such as during fasting or calorie restriction. Activation of AMPK can increase NAD+ levels by promoting the conversion of nicotinamide (NAM) to nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), which is a precursor for NAD+ synthesis.
Sirtuins are a group of proteins that are involved in regulating cellular processes related to aging and longevity.
They depend on NAD+ for their activity, and their activation has been associated with various health benefits.
Fasting and calorie restriction have been shown to increase sirtuin activity, which can have positive effects on lifespan and age-related diseases.
In terms of the specific effects of short-term dehydration and fasting on NAD+ production, the research is still limited, and most studies have focused on the effects of long-term fasting or calorie restriction.
However, it is plausible that short-term dehydration and fasting may induce similar responses in the body, leading to increased NAD+ production through activation of the AMPK and sirtuin pathways.
It's important to note that while short-term dehydration and fasting might trigger certain physiological responses that could potentially impact longevity, prolonged or severe dehydration can have detrimental effects on health. It is always essential to stay properly hydrated and consult with a healthcare professional before undertaking any fasting or dehydration protocols, especially if you have underlying health conditions.
In conclusion, short-term dehydration and fasting may activate cellular stress pathways, such as AMPK and sirtuins, which can potentially lead to increased NAD+ production and influence longevity-related processes. Although fasting has been around for thousands of years, the science around fasting is rather new and further research is needed.
The challenge of fasting is your ability to maintain it, that is how Zen Basil Hydrate was born.

Here’s some general information about healing powers of fasting.
1. Improved insulin sensitivity: Fasting can help regulate insulin levels and improve insulin sensitivity, which may be beneficial for individuals with insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes.
2. Increased fat burning: After approximately 24 hours of fasting, the body's glycogen stores become depleted, and it starts relying on fat stores for energy, which may contribute to weight loss.
3. Cellular repair and autophagy: Fasting triggers a process called autophagy, where the body breaks down and recycles damaged cells and cellular components, promoting cellular repair and rejuvenation.
4. Mental clarity and focus: Some people report increased mental clarity and focus during fasting, possibly due to the release of ketones, which are produced when the body burns fat for fuel.
Benefits after 36 hours of fasting:
1. Deeper ketosis: After around 36 hours of fasting, the body enters a state of deeper ketosis, where ketone production increases. This can provide additional energy for the brain and other organs.
2. Potential health benefits: Some studies suggest that longer fasting periods may have potential health benefits, such as reducing inflammation, improving cardiovascular health, and promoting longevity. However, more research is needed to fully understand these effects.
3. Enhanced autophagy: With an extended fasting period, autophagy is further stimulated, potentially leading to more significant cellular repair and rejuvenation.
4. Increased growth hormone levels: Prolonged fasting has been associated with increased levels of growth hormone, which can have various effects on the body, including promoting muscle growth and fat breakdown.
It's important to note that fasting may not be suitable for everyone. It's always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before embarking on an extended fast, especially if you have underlying health conditions or take medications. Additionally, it's crucial to listen to your body and ensure you're adequately hydrated during fasting periods.
